Antique Turkomen Tent Band
Antique Turkomen tent band from early 1900s. This is an exquisite long and wide white-ground tent band for use on the interior of a Turkmen tent, typically used to wrap around the inside of a yurt or round tent to keep the poles and trellis secure. The band was used as a tension band inside the yurt to keep things together while providing tribal designs for those living inside the yurt to appreciate.
The white ground is a flat weave which is ornamented with hand-knotted pile relief in red and blue. The dense knotted pile is made of natural animal hair using symmetrical knots which barely show on the reverse and features a repeat pattern of geometric motifs. . The red and blue dyes used to make these motifs are madder and indigo.
