Indian religious Pichwai painting

$240.00

Vintage religious Pichwai painting from 1960s, exquisitely painted on fine silk fabric.

This is a style of devotional painting that originated in Rajasthan over 400 years ago. These intricate and visually stunning paintings, made on cloth, depict tales from Lord Krishna's life. Creating a pichwai can take several weeks to months, and requires immense skill.

The word Pichwai, literally translates to 'that which hangs at the back', and refers to a unique form of devotional pictorial textiles made specifically for hanging in a Pushti Marg (path of grace) shrine devoted to Krishna.

In this scene Lord Krishna lifted the Goverdhan mountain on the little finger of his left hand after Indra got angry with the people of Vrindavan for not praying to her. The mountain provided relief to the people of Vrindavan for seven consecutive days after which Indra realized his mistake and apologized to Krishna.
