Vintage Mola cloth from 1960s

$150.00

Gorgeous handmade textile by the Guna (Kuna) people from Panama.

Dimensions: 19.75” x 24”

Molas have their origin in body painting. After spanish colonization, the traditional geometric designs that were used as body art, were transferred to fabric, first by painting directly on the fabric and later by using the technique of reverse applique. It is not certain when this technique was first used, but is thought to have originated in the second half of the 19th C. Each panel is constructed of multiple layers of cloth of contrasting colors. It takes many hours of sewing to create even the simplest mola.

This versatile textile piece can be used as a wall art (framed or otherwise) and will also make the perfect, one of a kind cushion cover.
