This is a gorgeous, highly intricate Makonde tree of life statue. These sculptures represent the interdependence of mankind. The sculpture shows human figures climbing up and holding on to each other, thus depicting how people survive by working with nature and each other across generations.
Tree of Life sculptures are made of African Blackwood also known as mpingo or African ebony. It is an extremely hard wood, that is strong and difficult to work with. This sculpture has been carved from a single piece of wood. Sculptures like this take over a year to carve.
