Vintage Michael Elkan maple burl box
Gorgeous hand-carved bird’s- eye maple burl box in mint condition. This is comprised of three linear edges and one organically formed burl edge, with a hinged lid opening to a sectioned compartments.

Michael Elkan (1942- 2014) was a self-taught craftsman, who fell in love with the forests and maple trees, particularly maple burls when he moved to Oregon. He started experimenting with creating unique burl boxes, one-of-a-kind sculptures and furniture. His work was exhibited in prestigious, craft shows and galleries including the American Craft Museum, the Smithsonian Craft Show. His book Reading the wood, is a wonderful tribute to the material, people, and processes involved in his creative woodworking business. He passed away a few years ago, but he lives on in his work.
